Dinner at the shore
by Melanie in Travel, Uncategorized
I went out after work with a co-worker for dinner and this is what we saw

Cape Cod
We were at one of the many bays and evidently facing west. I don’t think you can watch the sun set over the Atlantic Ocean, at least not from Massachusetts. The air was quite chilly and Jean said the water was even colder (she put her hand in) . We drove around Cape Cod for a while and stopped at a little diner in Falmouth, MA for dinner. Yum, lobster rolls.

Ah, the fun of air travel… Not!

While traveling to Springfield, MO from Pittsburgh on Monday I had a layover in Atlanta. I was flying Delta Airlines and Atlanta is their busiest hub. I was supposed to have an hour from arrival to departure but the flight was 45 minutes late leaving PIT and I ended up having 15 minutes from arrival to take off, of course my next flight was on time and I wasn’t lucky enough for it to be delayed too. My arriving flight arrived at gate B8 and I had to get to gate C52; keep in mind that the airlines close the flights 10 minutes before departure which meant I actually had 5 minutes to get from one gate to another. I ran from one end of the B concourse to the middle (gate 8 to gate 28), went down the very long and very slow escalator, waited for the tram from concourse to concourse, finally got on the tram, arrived at the C gates, up a very long and also very slow escalator, and ran to the end of the C concourse (from gate 30 to gate 52). It wasn’t fun but I hustled and luckily made the flight just as they were about to close it. I was glad that I checked my luggage and used my wheeled computer bag so that I could run quickly and not have to drag a 30 lb suitcase. I should have carried on, unluckily my luggage didn’t move as quickly as I did and missed the flight.
When I got to the Springfield airport I discovered my bag was not on the baggage carousel, bummer. I put in a claim for the bag and the kind agent told me that my bag was still in Atlanta. There was another flight arriving from Atlanta later in the evening and my bag would probably be on it and they would try to deliver my bag to my hotel in the evening. Note: I also overheard another agent tell someone that they don’t deliver delayed luggage after dark: I received a claim number and could check on their website to see the status of my bag. The website said my bag had been found and would be delivered between 11:00 PM and 11:00 AM. I didn’t believe I’d see my bag that night and had to be at work early in the morning. Hmmm, no change of clothes, tooth brush, make up, or anything else in my suitcase before the sun would come up. What to do? No problem, the hotel is across the street from a mall and also a strip mall with an Ann Taylor’s Loft. I ended up spending the evening finding enough stuff to get through the night and for work the next day. I found a really cute red sweater at Macy’s that will be great to wear over the holidays.
My bag arrived at my hotel in the morning after I left for work. Good thing I went shopping!

LA Traffic
by Melanie in Travel, Uncategorized
Today when I left the house it was snowing. Now I’m in Whittier, CA (a suburb of LA) and it’s quite warm out. I sat out on the patio outside my hotel room without a coat or shoes and was quite comfy.
I also learned something on my journey: If you’re flying into LAX and have drive 30 miles, most of it on the 105 and the 605, don’t schedule your flight at a time that puts you in the rental car at 6:00 pm. LA traffic is crazy at rush hour. It reminded me of a trip I made to LA with DD many years ago. We were in LA for a wedding and had some time for sight seeing. We tried out a few LA freeways at rush hour on a Friday evening.
In response to a comment on this morning’s post, I was talking about the registers not resisters. Spell check didn’t even catch it. And, the floor is now done! Yee Ha!
And to my other comment, yep we did have dinner in the Perrytowne Tavern Saturday evening.
